Researchers have developed a technique called natural language embedded programs (NLEPs) that enhance the performance of large language models by generating Python programs to solve complex tasks. This method improves accuracy, efficiency, and transparency, allowing users to directly see and modify the generated code. NLEPs enable large models like GPT-4 to handle a wider range of tasks with higher precision, potentially benefiting data privacy and smaller models without extensive retraining.
Large language models, such as ChatGPT, have shown impressive performance in various tasks but struggle with tasks requiring numerical or symbolic reasoning. NLEPs address this limitation by prompting models to generate Python programs to solve user queries, increasing accuracy and transparency.
The NLEP design involves four steps: calling necessary packages, importing knowledge representations, implementing a function to calculate the answer, and outputting the result in natural language. This approach offers greater efficiency and transparency, allowing users to investigate and fix errors in the code directly.
NLEPs have achieved over 90% accuracy in solving symbolic reasoning tasks and outperformed task-specific prompting methods. They also have the potential to enhance data privacy and improve the performance of smaller language models without the need for extensive retraining.
While NLEPs rely on the program generation capability of large models, the researchers plan to explore methods to make smaller models generate more effective NLEPs. This research has significant implications for enhancing the reasoning capabilities of large language models and improving their transparency and trustworthiness.
