AI Tool Copies Apple’s Weather App Feature on iPhone #DesignAI

New AI-Powered iOS App Narrates Any PDF or Webpage • iPhone in Canada Blog

Figma, a design platform, recently launched an AI app design tool called Make Design, which uses generative AI to create apps from user prompts. However, it was discovered that the tool was copying Apple’s Weather app. Not Boring Software CEO Andy Allen found that asking Make Design to design a weather app resulted in designs that closely resembled Apple’s app. Figma CEO Dylan Field acknowledged the issue and disabled the Make Design feature temporarily to address the problem. Field and Figma CTO Kris Rasmussen assured users that Figma’s generative AI features are not trained on user work. The issue was attributed to third-party models used by Make Design. Figma sources AI models from vendors like OpenAI, Amazon Titan, and Jasper. The similarity to Apple Weather suggests that the iOS app is in the training data for the AI models. This incident highlights the risk of copycat apps and the importance of ensuring originality in design. Apple has dealt with copycat apps before, but Figma’s quick response in disabling Make Design prevented potential legal issues for users.
