Researchers at Boston University have developed an artificial intelligence tool that can predict with nearly 80% accuracy whether someone is at risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease based on their speech patterns. The tool analyzes speech patterns to identify potential cognitive decline early, which experts believe could help mitigate the progression of Alzheimer’s. However, the sample size used in the study was small, and experts caution against relying solely on this tool for diagnosis.
The researchers focused on a cohort of 166 individuals who had some level of cognitive complaints and were part of the Framingham Heart Study. By combining speech-recognition tools and machine learning, they were able to track connections between speech patterns and cognitive decline, predicting significant cognitive decline with 78.5% accuracy.
Using AI to detect Alzheimer’s early offers doctors and patients more options for intervention and personalized care plans. The tool enables early intervention, improves accessibility to cognitive assessments, and helps healthcare providers prioritize patients needing intensive monitoring. It also provides valuable data for refining predictive models and developing new treatment strategies.
While the accuracy rate of the AI tool is promising, there is still the potential for false positives or negatives, and clinicians are cautioned against over-relying on AI predictions without considering the broader clinical context. Ultimately, the tool is not meant to be used alone but in conjunction with other diagnostic methods to provide a more accurate picture of an individual’s cognitive health.
