Amazon is reportedly developing a new AI chatbot called “Metis” to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Powered by an internal AI model called Olympus, Metis aims to provide conversational text and image-based responses with features like suggesting follow-up queries and generating images. The key technology behind Metis is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), allowing it to access information beyond its training data and provide up-to-date information like stock prices.
Metis is expected to function as an AI agent capable of autonomously performing complex tasks, showcasing Amazon’s ambition to create a versatile AI assistant. This development comes as Amazon has faced criticism for falling behind in the AI race, prompting the company to make strides in AI development with initiatives like Amazon Q and AWS offering free cloud credits for generative AI startups.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is directly involved in the Metis project, which falls under the AGI team led by Rohit Prasad. The tentative launch date for Metis is set for September, coinciding with a major Alexa event. However, some team members feel Amazon is late to the AI chatbot game, raising questions about the company’s investment in the project.
As Amazon enters the chatbot market with Metis, it may disrupt the industry dominated by players like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. To stand out, Amazon will need to bring innovation to compete in this crowded market as the AI landscape continues to evolve rapidly.
