Apple joins OpenAI board as observer, enhancing AI collaboration. #AI

Apple has secured an observer role on the board of OpenAI, similar to Microsoft, its biggest backer. This move was part of a deal between Apple and OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Apple devices. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, highlighted that this partnership will enhance AI features for users, including an improved Siri voice assistant. Phil Schiller, head of Apple’s App Store, will take on the observer role later this year.

Microsoft has invested $13bn in OpenAI, allowing the start-up to use its computing and cloud resources while remaining independent. OpenAI recently revamped its board, with founder Sam Altman rejoining after a brief ousting. The board also added new members like Fidji Simo, Sue Desmond-Hellman, and Nicole Seligman. The deal with Apple comes as tech giants are racing to develop AI products and partnering with start-ups in the field.

The partnership between Big Tech and emerging AI groups has drawn scrutiny from US antitrust regulators. Apple’s deal with OpenAI will not involve payment for using ChatGPT but will provide access to millions of users. The “Apple Intelligence” suite of generative AI features is set to launch later this year. Overall, this collaboration signifies Apple’s commitment to incorporating AI technology into its products and staying competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
