Apple Inc. has agreed to take on an observer role on OpenAI’s board, with Phil Schiller, the former marketing chief and current head of the App Store at Apple, being selected for the position. This move comes after Apple announced plans to integrate ChatGPT into its devices as part of its AI offerings. The observer role will allow Apple to attend board meetings and gain insights into OpenAI’s decision-making processes, similar to Microsoft Corp., another major backer of OpenAI.
The presence of both Microsoft and Apple in OpenAI board meetings could lead to complications due to their history as both rivals and partners. It is expected that certain meetings may involve discussions on future AI initiatives involving OpenAI and Microsoft, during which Microsoft may prefer Schiller to be absent. Despite not being directly involved in Apple’s AI initiatives, Schiller’s experience in managing the company’s brand makes him a suitable choice for the observer position.
At 64, Schiller stepped down as head of marketing in 2020 and now holds the title of Apple Fellow, overseeing the App Store and managing product launch events. The observer role does not grant voting rights or director powers, but it provides valuable insights into OpenAI’s operations and decision-making processes.
