Apple recently announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring more AI capabilities to iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. Users will have access to Apple Intelligence as well as the option to tap into ChatGPT for more insights. Apple is also in negotiations with Google and Anthropic to integrate their AI technologies into its platforms, with plans to include Google’s Gemini AI this fall. Previous reports of a potential partnership with Meta for its Llama chatbot have been dismissed.
Apple Intelligence is set to launch later this year, initially available in US English for select devices. It will leverage on-device and online language models to perform tasks such as answering questions and generating images. Apple has built a Private Cloud Compute server to handle AI requests, prioritizing user privacy and security by deleting data after tasks are completed and encrypting user data.
While Apple Intelligence will handle most tasks, it will prompt users for permission to access ChatGPT or other chatbots for queries that exceed its capabilities. The goal is to enhance user experience by providing a wider array of AI-powered functionalities. Apple plans to expand the availability of these features to more languages over time, ensuring a broader reach for its advanced AI capabilities.
