Artist transcends traditional notions of Native American art | Colorado Arts and Sciences Magazine

Anna Tsouhlarakis, a self-described math and science nerd in high school, found her passion in art and Native American Studies while studying at Dartmouth College. Despite defying stereotypes, she has gained recognition for her art, with exhibitions in various countries and prestigious awards. In 2023, she performed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, showcasing her work that commemorated missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.

Tsouhlarakis, of Navajo, Creek, and Greek descent, challenges traditional expectations of Native American art by incorporating humor and addressing serious issues. Her art often explores themes of identity, culture, and resilience within Native communities. She uses humor as a coping mechanism and a way to challenge preconceived notions of Native art.

Her work has been supported by numerous organizations and she has received several awards and fellowships. Tsouhlarakis holds an MFA from Yale University and currently serves as an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. She continues to push boundaries and expand the definition of Native American art through her innovative and thought-provoking creations.
