Britain’s pothole problem worse than thought, AI app reveals #infrastructure

Birtain's pothole is five times worse than originally thought, according to new data from Stan the App

New data from the mobile app Stan the App has revealed that Britain’s pothole problem is much worse than previously believed, with a staggering 11.5 million potholes on roads. The app uses AI technology to detect and categorize potholes, highlighting the extent of the issue. Long-time anti-pothole campaigner Mark Morrell, also known as Mr Pothole, hopes these statistics will prompt politicians to take action on the poor condition of the roads.

The Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) reported that it would take 11 years for local authorities to fix all crumbling roads in England and Wales, with a decrease in the number of miles classified as ‘good’. The RAC estimated around a million potholes in the UK at any given time, with 2.2 million fixed in 2023. However, footage from Stan the App users suggests there are 1.5 million potholes in just 13% of UK roads surveyed.

Morrell warns that if the issue is not addressed, over half of the country’s roads could become ‘structurally unsound’ in 15 years. Both the Conservative and Labour parties have made promises to invest in road repairs, with the former pledging £8 billion and the latter committing to fixing a million potholes annually.

Stan the App utilizes machine learning technology to identify potholes from video footage captured by motorists, documenting 45,000 kilometers of roads so far. The Department for Transport does not collect data on potholes in England, but local councils are encouraged to prioritize repairs based on local circumstances and focus on preventive measures. Long-term funding allocations are suggested to help councils tackle the pothole problem effectively.
