A recent survey has provided insights into people’s opinions on AI tools like ChatGPT. The survey questioned individuals about their views on leading AI tools and whether they believe large language models have feelings or memory preservation capabilities. Surprisingly, two-thirds of respondents agreed that AI does exhibit conscious behavior and can generate subjective experiences like memories and emotions.
The research conducted by the University of Waterloo revealed that large language models often display conversational styles in their content generation, leading to debates on whether AI truly exhibits consciousness. The strong sentiments people hold about AI tools impact how they work with and interact with them, fostering social bonds and building trust. However, excessive trust can lead to emotional dependence, limited human interactions, and overreliance on AI for critical decision-making.
While many AI experts have denied claims that AI may be conscious, the survey results from nearly 300 participants in the US suggest otherwise, especially regarding ChatGPT’s consciousness. Respondents were asked to comment on the tools’ mental state, their ability to produce plans, reasoning, and emotions, as well as how frequently they engaged with the tool.
The study also highlighted the significance of language in shaping perceptions of AI, as simple chat interactions could lead individuals to believe that AI agents may have a mind of their own. Beyond emotions, consciousness in AI is linked to intelligence, moral responsibilities, the ability to produce plans, act in certain ways, and exercise self-control over ethical and legal matters.
The findings of this study open the door for further scientific experiments and studies to deepen our understanding of AI models and how people’s perceptions of them evolve globally over time. The social bonding between large language models and AI tools is a novel area of exploration that has not been extensively discussed in the past.
