Today’s frontier large language models (LLMs) still struggle to accurately call the right functions due to several reasons. Firstly, LLMs lack explicit contextual information, relying heavily on user-provided context which can be vague or incomplete. Secondly, natural language is inherently ambiguous, making it difficult for LLMs to determine the exact function needed without clear instructions. Additionally, the complexity of tasks requiring multiple functions or dynamic sequences can distract LLMs from their tasks. Limited training on specific APIs also hinders LLMs’ ability to choose the right functions accurately. Furthermore, APIs and functions evolve, posing a challenge for static models trained on historical data to keep up-to-date with changes. Lastly, accurately understanding user intent is crucial, as misinterpretation can lead to calling the wrong function. To address these challenges, solutions such as domain-specific fine-tuning, atomic programming, cognitive API integrators, and clear setting of developer expectations are being developed. Overall, staying close to users and continuously evolving and adapting LLMs can help overcome these limitations and improve their performance in accurately calling the right functions.
