CISOs are confident that the adoption of AI security tools will lead to a reduction in security staff within the next five years, according to Bugcrowd’s report. The report found that 78% of CISOs are already using AI to support their security teams, with 70% planning to reduce security team headcounts as a result of AI adoption. Additionally, 44% of respondents believe AI security tools can outperform security professionals, and 47% think they will do so in the future.
The report also highlighted regional differences in attitudes towards AI, with CISOs in Asia-Pacific and Australia being more positive about the technology compared to their counterparts in North America and EMEA. Despite the optimism around AI, experts like Jon France from ISC2 caution that AI will transform cybersecurity roles but may not necessarily result in minimizing security teams in the short term. Instead, AI is expected to enhance efficiency and allow professionals to focus on more complex tasks.
Rik Ferguson from Forescout Technologies warned against reducing security team headcounts too quickly, emphasizing the importance of AI in helping deal with the overwhelming volume of alerts and information that security teams face. He stressed that AI should elevate the role of SOC analysts, not replace them. Overall, while AI is expected to reshape cybersecurity roles and enhance team capabilities, it is seen as a complement to human skills rather than a replacement for skilled cyber talent.
