DRDO partners with startup on AI tool for defence, law enforcement

India’s Defence, law enforcement, corporate, and public infrastructure agencies may soon have access to an indigenous AI authentication system called ‘Divya Drishti’, developed by a woman-led start-up. The system integrates facial recognition with physiological parameters like gait and skeleton for enhanced accuracy in identifying individuals. Developed under the guidance of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIR) by Ingenious Research Solutions Pvt Ltd., the tool aims to minimize the risk of false positives and identity fraud.

DRDO’s interest in AI development is evident from its collaborations with institutions like IIT Bhubaneswar for AI-driven surveillance projects. The Indian army is also working on an AI roadmap for the next 20-25 years, highlighting the growing interest in AI technology. However, concerns arise regarding the potential biases in AI tools, especially in law enforcement. A previous RTI report revealed how the Delhi police used facial recognition technology with low accuracy rates, leading to religious bias.

While the development of indigenous AI tools is commendable, efforts must be made to address biases in these technologies. It is essential to ensure that AI tools are used ethically and responsibly, especially in sensitive areas like law enforcement. The collaboration between the start-up and DRDO is a step in the right direction, but more measures need to be taken to prevent discriminatory practices in AI applications.
