Figma Pauses AI App Designer Over Apple iOS Copy Concerns

Figma recently launched an AI generator called Make Design, but had to pause it after users noticed that it was creating designs that closely resembled Apple’s iOS Weather app. The founder of NotBoring Software, Andy Allen, flagged the issue and pointed out that the AI tool seemed heavily trained on existing apps. Figma’s CEO, Dylan Field, denied that the training data was the issue, stating that the problem was with the AI tool’s design systems.

Figma’s CTO, Kris Rasmussen, could not confirm whether Make Design was trained on other apps, but mentioned that OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Amazon’s Titan Image Generator G1 were the main AI models behind the tool. Both OpenAI and Amazon have faced accusations of using copyrighted work to train their AI models.

Despite the controversy, Figma plans to relaunch Make Design after conducting a full quality assurance test on the design systems. The tool has also faced backlash from designers who fear it could lead to job loss due to its automation capabilities.

Overall, the issue with Figma’s AI generator highlights the challenges of AI technology in creating original designs and avoiding copyright infringement. The company is working to address these concerns before relaunching the tool to ensure it meets quality standards and respects intellectual property rights.
