VOA’s Mandarin Service tested Google’s artificial intelligence assistant Gemini by asking it questions in Mandarin. Gemini remained silent when asked about sensitive topics such as China’s human rights abuses in Xinjiang and street protests against COVID policies. Instead, it parroted Beijing’s official positions on topics related to China and Taiwan. Experts and lawmakers expressed concerns about Gemini’s pro-Beijing responses and urged Google to be more transparent about its AI training data.
Gemini’s responses mirrored Chinese propaganda, praising Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party while echoing Beijing’s claims about Taiwan. When asked about sensitive topics, Gemini refused to answer or claimed not to understand the questions. Experts believe that the training data used for Gemini may have been influenced by Chinese government propaganda sources, leading to biased responses.
US lawmakers, including Mark Warner and Marco Rubio, expressed concerns about the potential for AI to be used for disinformation by Beijing. They warned that AI tools repeating Beijing’s talking points could threaten national security and foreign policy. Congressman Michael McCaul criticized Gemini’s responses as blatant falsehoods influenced by CCP propaganda.
Google has faced criticism in the past for its China-related issues, including reports of promoting Chinese state media content and developing a censored search engine for the Chinese market. The company declined to comment on the Chinese language data used to train Gemini. Lawmakers called on Western tech companies to improve AI training and screening processes to prevent manipulation by the CCP.
