At the recent developers’ conference I/O 2024, Google announced the broader rollout of the YouTube Music Gemini Extension, enhancing the functionality of its AI chatbot, Gemini. This new feature allows users to connect and control YouTube Music within the chatbot, bringing basic phone assistant capabilities to the platform. To activate the extension, users can visit gemini.google.com/extensions on their PC or Android phone. Gemini can access the user’s YouTube Music library and respond to various music-related commands in English. Users can issue commands like “Play [song]” or “Play [artist]” to initiate playback on Android devices or open the YouTube Music app on iOS. Gemini provides cover art, artist information, and playback controls such as pause, resume, stop, skip, and restart tracks. The chatbot can also respond to conversational prompts like “Show some rock music” or “Play music that I like.” However, the extension is not fully operational on PC, with desktop users receiving a response directing them to the song on YouTube Music. Google plans to expand Gemini’s functionality with new extensions for Calendar, Keep, Tasks, and the Clock app, making it an integral part of Google’s ecosystem for a wide range of tasks and services.
