Google Translate expands language support, now nearly doubled #translation

Google Translate just nearly doubled its number of supported languages

Google has expanded its Google Translate service by adding support for 110 new languages, using the PaLM 2 large language model. This brings the total number of supported languages to 243, with a goal of reaching 1,000 languages through AI. The newly added languages are spoken by over 614 million people, with a focus on African languages. Google’s approach to selecting languages prioritizes commonly used varieties, considering regional dialects and spelling standards. In comparison, Apple Translate currently supports 21 languages and is planning to add Hindi. The two tech giants have different approaches and investments in their translation tools. The full list of languages added by Google can be found on their help page.
