Google Translate adds two more SA languages

Google Translate has added support for 110 new languages, including TshiVenda and siSwati from South Africa. This expansion is part of Google’s 1,000 Languages Initiative, using AI models to support the most spoken languages globally. The addition of these African languages represents the largest African language addition to Google Translate. The new languages cater to over 614 million speakers, reaching 8% of the global population. Google emphasizes the importance of language in communication and interaction, highlighting the inclusion of languages like Afar, Cantonese, Manx, Nko, Punjabi, Tamazight, and Tok Pisin. The selection process for new languages considers dialects and the most commonly used varieties. The PaLM 2 large language model has been instrumental in enhancing translation efficiency and learning closely related languages. Google plans to continue expanding language support by collaborating with linguists and native speakers. Siya Madikane, Google SA communications manager, notes the careful consideration that goes into selecting new languages for Google Translate.
