Google Translate Adds 110 New Languages

Google Translate, a language translation tool by Google, has been around for almost 20 years and supports 133 languages. Recently, with the help of AI models, Google Translate has added support for 110 new languages, bringing the total to 243. This expansion covers languages spoken by over 614 million people, representing around 8% of the world’s population. The addition of languages like Cantonese, Marwadi, Awadhi, and Punjabi, among others, has been made possible by the use of the PaLM 2 AI language model.

Cantonese, in particular, was a highly requested language due to its close relation to Mandarin. The addition of languages from the African continent, such as Wolof, Venda, Swati, Nko, Luo, Kikongo, Ga, and Fon, highlights Google Translate’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. With over 500 million people using the translation service daily, Google Translate has become a go-to tool for crossing language barriers.

The use of advanced AI language models suggests that Google Translate will continue to evolve and improve in the future. This development showcases Google’s dedication to making language translation more accessible and efficient for users worldwide.
