Guide to running Stable Diffusion at home. #homefitness

A friendly guide to local AI image gen with Stable Diffusion and Automatic1111 • The Register

Microsoft’s Copilot+ AI PCs have introduced new machine-learning features, including an image generator in MS Paint that transforms doodles into art. However, these features are only accessible on Copilot+ AI PCs. Fortunately, users with modern graphics cards can experiment with AI image generation locally. Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion models have gained popularity for local image generation due to their compact size, permissive license, and accessibility. Unlike proprietary models, Stable Diffusion models can be downloaded and run independently.

Various applications and services have emerged to facilitate the deployment of Stable Diffusion-derived models on different hardware setups. These models work by taking random noise and using denoising steps to generate recognizable images or audio samples based on specific prompts. The training process involves applying noise to labeled images and training the model to reverse this process, creating clear images from noise.

Automatic1111’s Stable Diffusion Web UI is a popular tool for running diffusion models locally. It provides a user-friendly web GUI for creating AI-generated images on Windows, Linux, and macOS systems with Nvidia, AMD, Intel, or Apple Silicon GPUs. The installation process varies based on the OS and hardware, with specific instructions provided for Linux, Windows, and macOS setups. However, Intel graphics are not natively supported, but an OpenVINO fork may offer compatibility.

For Linux users with AMD or Nvidia GPUs, dependencies like Python 3.10 and additional packages for AMD GPUs may be required. The A1111 web UI can be installed using git, and launching the web UI initiates the download of necessary packages and the Stable Diffusion 1.5 model file. Troubleshooting tips are provided for potential issues, such as modifying the webui-user.sh file for AMD GPUs. Additional tips and instructions are available for Windows and macOS installations.
