High school students create AI app for safe travel #innovation

Two Merivale High School students, Rohan Bahl and Matthew Zhou, developed an AI-based computer program called Traffic Helper that plots the safest routes for pedestrians and motorists in Ottawa based on historical accident data. The app was initially a year-end assignment for their Grade 12 computer science class but grew into a larger project. They used open-source data and AI frameworks like Python TensorFlow and Meta’s PyTorch to optimize safe travel routes. The app, which is open-source and available on GitHub, allows users to prioritize safety, time, and distance in their travel plans. It is unique in the sense that it optimizes for safety, unlike other tools like Google and Apple maps that focus on speed and distance. The students hope to expand the app to other cities if more computing power becomes available. They have no plans to commercialize it but want others to contribute to its development for the benefit of more people. Bahl and Zhou, both interested in computer science and engineering careers, aim to build an online personal assistant for the elderly and disabled in their next project.
