One-third of college instructors are using genAI—here's how

Faculty and staff members who regularly use AI are primarily using it for content creation, according to recent research. While students have higher usage rates of AI compared to instructors in higher education, there is a growing acceptance of the technology among practitioners both inside and outside the classroom. Many practitioners are using AI to create student-facing content and communication, sometimes without institutional policy or guidance.

Among faculty members using AI, the majority apply it for course design and content-related purposes, with generative AI tools like ChatGPT being popular for course content and assessment. Some instructors are also automating the feedback and grading process, leading to reduced workload in tasks such as developing course materials and providing tailored feedback.

However, concerns about academic integrity and ethical use of AI exist, with some students expressing willingness to use AI tools even if banned by instructors. Faculty members’ attitudes toward student learning are influenced by their use of AI, with non-users more likely to perceive a negative impact.

Staff members are also using AI in their roles, with benefits such as reducing time spent on drafting student communications and using chat bots to field questions. However, there are concerns about errors in AI communication and biases in AI-generated content.

Institutional policies on AI use are still developing, with a significant portion of administrators working on implementing policies. Training on the use of generative AI tools is a priority for administrators, while student success professionals seek more opportunities to experiment with AI technology and share knowledge with peers.
