The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) recently reached an agreement with major studios regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool by film crews. The deal allows workers to request consultations about AI use, establishes a committee for AI skills training, and prohibits outsourcing AI work to non-union labor. Workers can charge a “kit rental fee” if they use their own AI system, but there is no provision for severance pay if jobs are lost due to AI. The agreement also requires separate consent for AI scanning and prohibits it from being a condition of employment.
The deal addresses concerns raised during strikes by other unions, ensuring creators have control over AI use and are compensated for it. IATSE’s terms cover a wide range of disciplines within the industry and aim to protect workers while embracing the potential benefits of AI. Employers have the right to restrict AI use and must indemnify workers from legal liability, except in cases of negligence or misconduct.
The agreement also includes provisions for regular meetings to discuss AI implementation and funding streams for benefit plans and wage increases. The union negotiated a 7% increase in the first year, followed by 4% and 3.5% increases, along with increased funding for health and pension plans. Overall, the deal ensures no increases in healthcare costs or reductions in benefits for employees and their dependents. Town halls will be held to explain the terms to members before a ratification vote.
