The co-founder of an Indian AI venture accepted a challenge from OpenAI’s Sam Altman to develop a large-language model (LLM) for just $5 million. CP Gurnani, the former CEO of Tech Mahindra and founder of AIonOS, revealed that the LLM was created within five months in response to Altman’s skepticism about India’s ability to deliver such a model. Tech Mahindra, a Mumbai-based IT firm, developed an Indian LLM capable of communicating in 40 different local languages and dialects. Altman had previously expressed doubts about competing with OpenAI on training foundation models, but encouraged startups to try new and innovative approaches. Gurnani emphasized the potential of AI to enhance productivity in various sectors and declared India a significant player in the AI race, on its way to self-reliance. Tech Mahindra launched Project Indus, the first phase of its LLM, designed to converse in Indic languages and dialects. The model utilizes Dell Computers’ technology for accessibility and scalability. The collaboration aims to redefine AI solutions for industries like healthcare, education, finance, agriculture, and telecom. Tech Mahindra plans to expand the LLM to include Bahasa Indonesia, the official language of Indonesia, to facilitate communication in local dialects. The organization envisions the widespread use of AI solutions to drive innovation and growth.
