In March 2023, OpenAI launched GPT-4, which was touted as being superior to its predecessor in terms of accuracy, reasoning ability, and test scores. One notable aspect of GPT-4 was its characterization as “more aligned” with human values, marking a shift in how AI products are marketed. This article presents a framework for addressing the development challenges of creating AI-enabled products and services that are safe to use and aligned with generally accepted and company-specific values. The challenges are categorized into five stages of the innovation process: design, development, deployment, and usage monitoring. The authors provide an overview of frameworks, practices, and tools that executives can use to address these challenges.
