Is AI the Future of Asteroid Detection? #AIastronomy

Asteroid Detection by AI: Future Possibility or Reality? | by Ritvik Nayak | Jun, 2024

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a crucial tool in asteroid detection, with companies like OpenAI and NVIDIA leading the way. Traditionally, asteroid detection relied on human calculations and observations, but AI now plays a significant role in this field. AI algorithms can process large amounts of data quickly, enabling the identification of asteroids that may go unnoticed by humans. Modern machine learning models excel at pattern recognition, making them adept at identifying subtle changes that indicate asteroid orbits.

Recent applications of AI in asteroid detection include the discovery of 27,500 previously unknown asteroids by an AI named THOR. The European Space Agency and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory have also integrated AI into their systems to detect asteroids. Challenges in AI asteroid detection include the need for high-quality data and significant computational power for training models.

While AI currently serves as an assistant to humans in asteroid detection, future advancements in technology and increased computational power are expected to enhance AI’s capabilities in this field. AI is poised to play a crucial role in protecting Earth from asteroid threats in the future.
