The Japanese government and private companies are collaborating to advance AI translation technology, with the goal of tripling the export volume of Japanese manga within the next five years. Ten companies, including Shogakukan and the Japan Innovation Corporation (JIC), have invested 2.92 billion yen in a startup called Orange to enhance manga translation speed and boost Japan’s content industry growth. Post-World War II, Japan’s cultural discourse shifted from a “technological nationalism” to a “soft power nationalism,” emphasizing Japan’s technological prowess as a reflection of its cultural identity. However, this development overlooked Japan’s changing geopolitical position and its susceptibility to external influences. The “Cool Japan” policy aims to promote the internationalization of the cultural industry in Japan.
