Japan has announced plans to assist Southeast Asian countries in training large language models (LLMs) in their local languages to advance artificial intelligence (AI) in the region. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is set to unveil this initiative at the Asia Business Summit on July 5. Japan sees AI and decarbonisation as areas where it can provide unique assistance to ASEAN countries and aims to foster partnerships between Japanese AI companies and businesses in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and other countries in the region.
LLMs, such as ChatGPT, require extensive data training, with most advancements currently focused on widely used languages like English. Japan aims to collaborate with Southeast Asian partners to train LLMs in local languages and cultural contexts, providing computational resources like graphics processing units for data processing. Partnerships have already begun, with Tokyo-based Elyza developing a Thai LLM to facilitate business matching between Japan and Thailand.
Japan’s Generative AI Accelerator Challenge (GENIAC) programme will offer 29 billion JPY (US$179.8 million) in aid by the end of the fiscal year to support digital startups. Additionally, Kishida will discuss a digital skills-building plan to train 100,000 people over five years in cooperation with ASEAN members. This initiative aims to promote AI development and enhance digital skills in the region.
