Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has opened up new possibilities in various industries, but the potential for misuse is becoming more apparent. A study by Google DeepMind and Jigsaw titled “Generative AI Misuse: A Taxonomy of Tactics and Insights from Real-World Data” highlights the most common forms of AI abuse, such as deep fakes and disinformation. The study analyzed over 200 incidents of AI misuse from January 2023 to March 2024, with deceptive deepfake media targeting politicians and public figures being the most common form of abuse. The second most frequent type of misuse involves using language models to generate disinformation. These activities are often motivated by the desire to influence public opinion, political narratives, and financial gain through fraud. This article explores the study’s findings, summarizing key misuse tactics and their implications for society.
