Mark Crovella, a professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been awarded a project as part of the Nation Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot Project. This NSF-backed program aims to investigate potential biases in AI models, such as spreading extreme views or discriminating against certain groups. The project was one of 35 selected as a result of President Biden’s Executive Order in October 2023 to govern the development of AI safely and responsibly.
Crovella will focus on studying large language models (LLMs), which are AI algorithms used for summarizing, translating, predicting, and generating text and data. The goal is to determine if these models contain biases, promote hateful speech, or spread disinformation in order to make them more trustworthy. LLMs are currently used in platforms like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, and are expanding into other sectors like education.
Through the NAIRR program, Crovella will have access to advanced supercomputing resources and data to conduct his research.
