Meta mistakenly labels photos with ‘Made with AI’ tag. #Mislabeling

Meta incorrectly tags original photos with 'Made with AI' label

Meta’s photo tagging system is facing criticism for incorrectly labeling original photos as “Made with AI.” This issue has sparked debate among photographers, especially when editing tools like Adobe’s Generative AI Fill are used. Despite the controversy, Meta has not responded, raising concerns about the inconsistency in labeling AI-generated photos. The AI label is only visible on mobile apps and not on web platforms.

Photographers argue that basic editing should not warrant the “Made with AI” label, as seen in the mislabeling of photos by Meta. Former White House photographer Pete Souza experienced this issue firsthand and suggested that changes in Adobe’s cropping tool functionality might trigger Meta’s algorithm to attach the incorrect label.

Meta has remained silent on the allegations, despite the growing controversy. The company’s explanation of detecting AI labels has not addressed photographers’ concerns about mislabeled non-AI created photos. The confusion about the extent of AI involvement in photos has led to a debate among photographers, with some suggesting that all AI tool usage should be disclosed.

Interestingly, Meta has not labeled clearly AI-generated photos on its platforms, adding to the inconsistency in labeling. This issue comes at a time when social media companies are under increased scrutiny to handle AI-generated content correctly, especially with the upcoming US elections. Accurate labeling of content is crucial for information dissemination and public perception.
