For example, training ChatGPT-3 consumed approximately 700,000 liters of fresh water. The global demand for AI could require billions of cubic meters of water by 2027, surpassing the annual water withdrawal of entire countries.

Efforts to address the environmental impact of generative AI are underway, with initiatives like repurposing surplus heat from supercomputers for heating homes. Transparency regarding the environmental impacts of AI is lacking, but actions are being taken to mitigate the water consumption associated with AI development.

Each interaction with a generative AI model contributes to its ecological footprint, highlighting the importance of adopting responsible behaviors to ensure a more sustainable future. By being mindful of the environmental impact of AI and taking steps to reduce water consumption in AI development, individuals and industries can work towards a more sustainable use of artificial intelligence.
