OpenAI announces TIME partnership amid new lawsuit over copyright violations

OpenAI announced a partnership with TIME on June 27, granting OpenAI access to TIME’s archives to enhance user responses. In return, TIME will use OpenAI technology to develop new products and provide feedback on delivering journalism. However, the parent organization behind Mother Jones, the Center for Investigative Reporting, sued OpenAI and Microsoft for allegedly using Mother Jones’ content without permission. The lawsuit alleges violations of copyright laws and claims that companies should not treat publishers’ content as “free raw material.” OpenAI has formed deals with other companies like Reddit, Financial Times, Vox Media, and News Corp, but also faces lawsuits from media companies like the New York Times, Daily News, Chicago Tribune, and the Intercept. OpenAI responded to the New York Times’ lawsuit by stating that they had considered cooperating before the suit. The case with Mother Jones is ongoing in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
