OpenAI under scrutiny for AI training data practices. #ethics

OpenAI's New Acquisition: Multi, A Video-First Collaboration Startup for Enterprise Solutions : Tech : Tech Times

OpenAI is facing legal challenges due to its use of internet information for training its ChatGPT artificial intelligence. The company leverages publicly available data, including online books and papers, without compensating the owners. This practice has led to lawsuits from publishers seeking payment for their work. Other tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Meta are also scrambling to find new data sources for training AI models. Meta and OpenAI argue that posting copyrighted content online makes it “publicly available” and falls under fair use, but they are still facing legal action over the use of copyrighted content. The Center for Investigative Reporting has filed a complaint against Microsoft and OpenAI, accusing them of using copyrighted material to train their AI models. Previous lawsuits from prominent newspapers also allege copyright infringement by OpenAI and Microsoft. The case includes evidence of AI models producing quotes from specific publications without permission, as well as the ability to retrieve news stories from the internet without crediting sources. These legal battles highlight the challenges tech companies face in using data for AI training without violating copyright laws.
