OpenAI’s ChatGPT macOS app had a security issue where chats were stored on the computer in plain text, making them easily accessible to bad actors or malicious apps. Pedro José Pereira Vieito demonstrated how another app could access and display these conversations, prompting OpenAI to release an update that encrypts the chats. After downloading the update, Pereira Vieito’s app no longer worked for accessing conversations in plain text. The issue was discovered when Pereira Vieito checked where OpenAI stored the app data, noting that the app bypassed Apple’s sandboxing requirements by being distributed through OpenAI’s website. OpenAI may review ChatGPT conversations for safety and model training, but the issue raised concerns about unauthorized access to sensitive data.
