Nobel Prize-winning economist Claudia Goldin argues that true gender equality cannot be achieved without partner equality, specifically in how care work, domestic work, and mental labor are divided within families. Despite a decrease in families where men are the sole breadwinners, women still bear the brunt of care work and housework even in egalitarian marriages. The increasing complexity of managing a household and caring for children has led to the development of numerous apps in the family technology space to help ease the burden, but questions remain about their ability to bring about lasting gender equality. Issues of accessibility to these technologies and the need to change not just how work is done, but who does it, are also raised. New America’s Better Life Lab and the Fair Play Policy Institute are hosting a panel discussion on the potential and limitations of these technologies in promoting gender equality, featuring thought leaders in the family tech industry.
