Reports exaggerate law schools’ adoption of artificial intelligence #AI

A recent Reuters story highlighted that more than half of law schools now offer classes on artificial intelligence (AI), according to a survey conducted by the American Bar Association. The survey found that 55% of responding law schools offer dedicated AI classes, with 83% providing opportunities for students to learn how to use AI tools effectively. However, the survey had a limited response rate, with only 29 out of 200 schools replying. This means that the 55% figure actually represents just 8% of all law schools, and the 83% figure represents 12% of all law schools. The authors of the survey acknowledge that the results may not be a reliable measure of how legal education as a whole is responding to AI due to the small sample size and potential response bias. Despite this, the survey suggests that AI is already impacting legal education and will continue to do so in the future. Dean Andrew Perlman of Suffolk University Law School, one of the survey’s conductors, noted that while the low response rate makes it difficult to draw firm conclusions, the results indicate that a significant number of law schools are adapting to developments in AI. Ultimately, while the survey’s findings may not accurately reflect the current state of AI education in law schools, they do indicate a trend towards increased integration of AI into legal education.
