Oh Canada! Rogers trials Ericsson's Cloud RAN at a Blue Jays game

Ericsson is collaborating with Rogers to test cloud RAN technology, following AT&T’s deployment of Ericsson cloud RAN sites in Texas. Dell’Oro Group believes Ericsson could climb the RAN ranks with cloud RAN. Rogers conducted a commercial test of Ericsson’s 5G cloud RAN at a Toronto Blue Jays game on Canada Day. This move towards cloud RAN allows for more flexibility and scalability in deploying 5G using white box x86 servers. Ericsson has other global customers trialing and deploying Cloud RAN, including O2 Telefonica, Telstra, Verizon, AT&T, and Rogers.

Cloud RAN is projected to account for a significant portion of the RAN market by 2028, with Ericsson expected to improve its position in the virtualized RAN market. The Cloud RAN market size is predicted to grow significantly by 2031, with Huawei currently holding the largest RAN market share. Ericsson’s partnership with Rogers in deploying Cloud RAN could lead to increased opportunities in the Canadian market.
