Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore plays crucial role in developing language models for Galaxy AI, ET Telecom

Samsung’s largest research and development center outside Korea, SRI-Bangalore, collaborated with global teams and academic institutions to develop Galaxy AI, including AI language models for various languages. The center also developed the Hindi language for Galaxy AI, including more than 20 regional dialects. The complex phonetic structure of Hindi posed a challenge, but native linguists and the Vellore Institute of Technology helped in creating a special set of phenomes to support specific dialects.

The Vellore Institute of Technology provided almost a million lines of segmented and curated audio data for conversational speech, words, and commands, which was crucial in incorporating Hindi into Galaxy AI. As a result, Galaxy AI now supports 16 languages offline, enabling features like Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist.

Giridhar Jakki, Head of Language AI at Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore, emphasized the importance of AI innovation through collaboration and understanding language data to make AI tools accessible to more people in the future. The article was published on July 1, 2024, and highlighted Samsung’s commitment to enhancing AI capabilities through language development and collaboration with academic institutions.
