AI music generation platform Suno has experienced a mix of success and challenges over the past year. Despite raising $125 million in funding and reaching 12 million users, the company is now facing a copyright infringement lawsuit from major music companies. However, Suno has launched its first mobile app, allowing users to create full-length songs using text descriptions and lyrics. The app is currently available on the Apple Store in the US but will soon be available worldwide and on Android devices. Suno’s CEO, Mikey Shulman, expressed excitement about the app’s release, emphasizing the company’s focus on new music and new musicians.
The lawsuit against Suno alleges that the company used copyrighted songs without permission to train its AI, potentially saturating the market with machine-generated content. The Recording Industry Association of America coordinated the lawsuit, arguing against the fair use exemption for AI developers using copyrighted works. Suno has defended itself, stating that its technology generates new outputs rather than regurgitating existing content.
Despite the legal challenges, Suno received a significant funding boost earlier in the year, allowing the company to pay creators of popular AI-generated tracks. While the lawsuit poses a risk to Suno’s operations, the company remains committed to its mission of making music creation accessible to everyone.
