SuperAnimal is a revolutionary deep learning model that detects animal motion across various species and environments. This model, known as a “foundational model,” has the potential to transform animal conservation, biomedicine, and neuroscience research by providing critical insights into animal behavior. Animal behavior, encompassing interactions with others, the environment, and different organisms, is a crucial field of study, shedding light on activities like foraging, mating, parenting, social interactions, and communication. By understanding these behaviors, valuable insights into animal health, welfare, and ecological roles can be gained, leading to better conservation efforts and animal care practices.

SuperAnimal, developed by a team at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), can automatically identify keypoints in over 45 animal species without human intervention. This eliminates observer bias and enhances the accuracy and efficiency of behavioral analysis. The model is an evolution of a pose estimation technique known as DeepLabCut and has a wide range of applications in fields such as veterinary medicine, neuroscience, and agriculture.
