Testing Copilot, Gemini, and ChatGPT for best D&D story. #AIassistants

AI has been used in tabletop gaming, such as Roll20, to generate maps quickly, but it is often underutilized in crafting backstories for characters. To test the capabilities of AI in creating D&D character backstories, three AI chatbots were asked to write a backstory for a character. The criteria for a good backstory include providing hooks for the Dungeon Master, having reasonable character actions, allowing room for player customization, and being simple enough to summarize in a few sentences.

The first AI, ChatGPT, created the backstory of Elysande “Ely” Ravenshadow, a half-elf Ranger with a compelling story of loss and revenge. Microsoft Copilot generated the story of Thalion, another Half-Elf Ranger, with a dual nature as both a man and an elf. Google Gemini told the story of Elara, a variant human ranger with a thirst for knowledge and a heroic act of defeating a chimera.

Among the three AI models, ChatGPT was deemed the winner for creating the most engaging and fleshed-out backstory. While the other AI models had their moments, ChatGPT’s attention to detail and character development stood out. The use of AI in crafting D&D character backstories can be a helpful starting point for players, but personalization and customization are still important. The future of AI in storytelling, especially in the context of tabletop gaming, remains to be seen as advancements continue to be made in this field.
