A recent study led by researchers from the University of Tubingen Germany and Northwestern University has found that the use of large language models (LLM) has had a significant impact on scientific writing. By analyzing over 14 million abstract articles published in PubMed between 2010 and 2024, the researchers identified a spike in the use of certain words since the introduction of LLM at the end of 2022. Words like “delves,” “showcasing,” and “underscorres” saw a notable increase in usage after the LLM era.
Dr. Andreas M\”uller, one of the main researchers, noted that at least 10% of abstracts published in 2024 used LLM in the writing process. The study also compared the post-LLM word spikes to those during major world health events like the COVID-19 pandemic, showing a shift towards style words rather than event-related terms. The researchers suggest that the sudden increase in these words is likely due to the use of LLM, particularly among non-native writers who may need help with English text editing.
This discovery opens up opportunities for human editors to better detect and remove unnatural style words generated by LLM. By understanding LLM marker words, editors can improve the quality of generative text before it is shared in the scientific community. The study, published earlier this month, is expected to spark further discussions on the impact of AI-generated technology on modern scientific communication.
