From Nawaz to Imran: how political is Gemini?

Google Gemini is a new AI chatbot that aims to remain politically unbiased in its responses, but experts warn that its bias may depend on the data sets it is trained on. In December 2023, Google introduced Gemini, but in February 2024, it had to apologize for producing offensive and inaccurate images. When asked about former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, Gemini provided structured answers, showing more information about Khan. Software Engineer Javeria Urooj explains that chatbots are trained on data sets, which can influence their responses. The chatbot’s responses to questions about Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Imran Khan were similar, but it provided additional considerations for Khan. Digital rights activist Usama Khilji warns about the reliance on generative AI and chatbots, especially in countries with low digital literacy. AI expert Umair Arif explains that chatbots gather information from the internet, leading to information bias. The founder of Y Combinator, Paul Graham, highlights that current AIs may reflect opinions of certain groups more accurately than others. Gemini admits to inheriting biases present in its training data and acknowledges the challenge of achieving complete neutrality. Despite its efforts, Gemini continues to work towards minimizing biases in its responses.
