GPT-4 and other Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown exceptional proficiency in text analysis, interpretation, and generation, particularly in the financial sector. They excel in tasks like disclosure summarization, sentiment analysis, information extraction, report production, and compliance verification. While LLMs are adept at handling language-based tasks, their application in numerical analysis and judgment-based financial decisions is still being explored.
Recent research from the University of Chicago investigated whether GPT-4 could perform financial statement analysis (FSA) similar to human analysts. The study found that GPT-4 outperformed human analysts in predicting changes in earnings, even when provided only with numerical data from financial statements. The model’s predictive accuracy was comparable to specialized Machine Learning models trained for these tasks.
Interestingly, GPT-4’s predictive power was independent of its training memory, and it produced insightful narratives about future company performance. Trading strategies based on GPT-4’s forecasts yielded higher alphas and Sharpe ratios compared to other models, indicating superior returns adjusted for risk.
Overall, the study suggests that LLMs like GPT-4 could play a crucial role in financial decision-making, potentially replacing certain tasks currently performed by human analysts. Their ability to analyze financial statements accurately and make insightful predictions, along with their strong performance in real-world trading applications, highlights their potential impact on the financial industry.
