#WaterlooNews: AI consciousness debated, majority believe it’s possible. #AIConsciousness

A study from the University of Waterloo found that two-thirds of people believe AI tools like ChatGPT have some level of consciousness, leading to debates on the topic. Researchers suggest that this belief could impact how people interact with AI, potentially strengthening social bonds but also leading to over-reliance and emotional dependence. The study surveyed 300 people in the U.S. about their attitudes towards AI consciousness and found that the more they used ChatGPT, the more likely they were to attribute consciousness to it. The researchers emphasized the importance of considering public attitudes in designing and regulating AI for safe use. Future research will explore the factors driving consciousness attributions and their impact on trust and social bonding. The article was published in Neuroscience of Consciousness.
