Computer scientist and engineer Yanjun Gao, PhD, has joined the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine as an assistant professor. She will focus on developing natural language processing (NLP) technologies and innovative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for clinical settings. Gao’s interest in integrating AI and NLP into healthcare was sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading her to join a critical care unit data science lab at the University of Wisconsin (UW) Madison. She brings a National Library of Medicine K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award to CU, focusing on improving diagnostic accuracy using large language models (LLMs). Gao and her team have already developed a benchmark dataset and evaluation framework for assessing LLMs’ ability to understand medical data and synthesize clinical evidence. At CU, she plans to continue this work in her lab, the Language, Reasoning, and Knowledge (LARK) Lab, focusing on neurosymbolic approaches for scalable and explainable knowledge bases. Gao aims to improve LLMs’ medical uncertainty estimation over electronic health record data to support clinical decision-making. She is excited about the opportunities for collaboration and growth in the LARK Lab to solve problems in clinical settings using NLP and AI technologies.
