YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, is reportedly in talks with top record labels to license songs for training artificial intelligence music tools. The deal aims to use AI to clone the music of popular artists. YouTube is offering upfront payments to secure the music industry’s support, with major labels like Sony, Warner, and Universal being offered lump sums to persuade artists to permit their music for AI software training. However, many artists are concerned about AI music generation potentially undermining their work.
YouTube plans to launch an AI song generator this year and is in discussions with labels about other experiments. This initiative comes as AI firms like OpenAI are entering significant licensing agreements with media organizations to enhance AI products. Last year, YouTube tested an AI tool called “Dream Track” that allowed users to create short music clips using text prompts, but only ten artists participated in the test phase.
This move aligns with YouTube’s AI music principles, developed in collaboration with Universal Music Group, to responsibly leverage AI in the music domain. AI music generation is not new, with companies like Microsoft and Spotify also offering tools for generating AI music. The music industry is grappling with the implications of AI on music creation and copyright.
