AI app clones deceased family members, internet horrified. #ethics

A new app called “Vera AI” has raised eyebrows for claiming to allow users to create copies of friends or family members, including deceased loved ones. The app’s marketing materials suggest it can recreate someone you miss and keep talking without limits, leading to concerns about replacing human connection. The app’s description on the Google Play store boasts of being the first AI friend with emotional intelligence and the first chatbot product that behaves like a real person, although these claims have been disputed. The app asks users to share details about their AI friend to make conversations more meaningful, raising questions about how it recreates loved ones. The company behind the app, Bending Spoons, specializes in AI-facilitated photo editing apps and other AI tools. Italy’s Data Protection Authority has previously ruled against a similar AI app, citing risks to children and emotionally vulnerable individuals. The app’s data safety section has been revised to mention sharing personal and app info. The company has not responded to requests for comment. Overall, the app’s attempt to cash in on the trend of AI chatbots recreating relationships with deceased or living individuals has been met with skepticism and concerns about the ethical implications of such technology.
