AI chatbot educates on HIV/STIs, offers advice to drag queens. #LGBTQ+

A nonprofit organization, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, has developed an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot to provide sexual health and HIV care services to patients, especially those who are historically underserved. The chatbot is designed to handle delicate issues confidentially and is presented with the voice of a drag queen persona to create a non-judgmental and empathetic environment. Patients can interact with the chatbot to receive educational information, manage appointments, and get support.

The chatbot, based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model, has been well-received by patients, with almost 80% preferring the drag queen persona over a standard AI. The tool has been fine-tuned using vocabulary from drag performers and popular shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race. While there are concerns about AI tools reaching patients directly without immediate human oversight, the creators of this chatbot have rigorously tested it to ensure safety and accuracy.

The chatbot saves clinical staff time and allows providers to focus on more pressing issues during appointments. It also provides patients with basic sexual health information and tips, such as using condoms or PrEP. The creators of the chatbot are planning to monitor its impact on patients’ STI testing patterns and medication adherence.

While the chatbot aims to foster difficult conversations with sensitivity and empathy, it has the potential to draw criticism from conservative politicians. However, it has been successful in engaging patients, particularly those from communities of color, in conversations about sexual health. The creators hope to publish their findings in a research paper to demonstrate the effectiveness of AI tools in public health.
